Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to common questions about working with Tangerine Tiller.
Getting Started
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes — always. I'll come out, take a look at the job, and give you a straight number at no charge. No pressure, no obligation.
How do I get a quote?
Call or text me at (231) 333-8139, or use the contact form on this site. I'll get back to you promptly — usually the same day.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. I carry general liability insurance and am a licensed contractor in the state of Michigan. If you need documentation for a lender or local office, just ask.
Services
Do you take on small jobs, or only large projects?
Both. Whether it's a single ditch cleanout or a full site prep job, if it involves a machine and some dirt, I'm interested. Give me a call and we'll figure out if it's a good fit.
Can you haul away the material you dig up?
Yes, debris and spoil removal is something I handle. Just mention it when you reach out so I can factor it into the estimate.
Do you deliver gravel or dirt?
Yes — dirt and gravel delivery is one of the services I offer. I can also spread and grade it once it's on site.
Do you do septic system installation?
Currently, I will dig perc-test holes for site evaluation, but I don't take on full septic system installations just yet. I am fully licensed to install them, but I'm still working with a more experienced installer to perfect my methods before taking these on myself. If you need a full install, I'm happy to point you in the right direction.
Scheduling & Timing
When is the best time of year to schedule excavation work in the UP?
Late spring through fall is the prime window — typically mid-May through October, depending on the year. The ground needs to be fully thawed and firm enough to support equipment. I'd recommend reaching out in late winter or early spring to get on the schedule before things get busy.
How far out are you booked?
It varies by season. Spring fills up fastest. The earlier you reach out, the better your chances of getting your preferred timing. I'll always give you an honest timeline when you call.
Do you work in bad weather?
Depends on the job. Light rain usually isn't a problem. Saturated ground, heavy mud conditions, or standing water can make grading and excavation work counterproductive — I'll let you know if conditions aren't right rather than do the job halfway.
Pricing
How do you charge — by the hour or by the job?
It depends on the work. Straightforward jobs are usually quoted as a flat rate. For jobs where the scope is hard to pin down upfront, hourly may make more sense. I'll explain the pricing structure clearly before any work starts.
Why do I need an on-site estimate? Can't you just give me a price over the phone?
I can give you a rough ballpark, but an accurate quote really requires seeing the site. Slope, soil type, access, and existing conditions all affect the price. Coming out to take a look is the only way to give you a number I can stand behind.
Michigan & the UP
Do I need a permit for excavation or grading work on my property?
In Michigan, permits for excavation and grading are typically the homeowner's responsibility to obtain, not the contractor's. Requirements vary by township and project type. I'd recommend checking with your local township or county office before work begins. I can help you understand what's typically required based on your project.
Can you work in remote or rural areas of the UP?
That's most of where I work. I'm based out of Pickford and serve communities across the eastern Upper Peninsula — from Sault Ste. Marie to Petoskey and everywhere in between. Travel isn't an issue for most jobs in my service area.
